Chapter 3 Questions left unanswered

Ruka clutched her unresponsive daughter to her chest as she continued to sob uncontrollably while her husband stood near by his expression blank. The friends gathered around them tried desperately to think of something comforting to say, but the couldn't think of anything and knew that there wasn't anything they could say. Ayame was curled up on one of the expensive curled. She cried as quietly as she could. She not only cried for her own sorrows, the tears dripping down her face were also for the pain and sadness that filled the room. All of the agony was like a knife slowly working it's way into her heart.
Suzume gently placed a hand on her daughter's shoulder, "Come on sweetie, you need to go back to bed."
Not having either the will or the want to refuse her mother, Ayame took her hand and followed her down the long hallway. The little girl crawled quietly back into the bed that she had not so long ago left. "Mommy, I need to ask you something," Ayamed whispered to her mother.
"And what's that Ayame?" her mother asked her as she took a seat at the edge of the bed.
"Am I bad?" she questioned her mother, the beginnings of tears glistening in her eyes.
Suzume didn't hesitate to answer her daughter, "Oh no, honey! You do things you shouldn't sometimes, but you're not bad! Why would ever ask such a thing?"
"Innocence means goodness, right? That man said Sayuri was innocent and now she's hurt, but I'm not hurt at all!" Ayame blurted out.
"I think I can explain why you weren't hurt by that man and it has nothing to do with you being a bad girl okay?" Suzume reassured the youngest of her two children
     "Okay mommy."
"You know how you can sense how others are feeling? As a result of that you know who you can trust and who you can't. Since you couldn't sense the mans emotions you had an automatic distrust of him and Sayuri didn't. I think the because Sayuri didn't mistrust the man he was able to put some sort of enchantment on her. See, you aren't a bad girl, okay?" Suzume explained to Ayame.
"I understand mommy," Ayame answered comforted by her mother's words.
"Good. Now go to sleep," she tucked her daughter in, "I love you Ayame."
"I love you too mommy!" Ayame called out as her mother walked quietly out of the room she shared with her heavy sleeping twin. She curled up in her cocoon of blankets praying that this whole mess would be cleaned up before she awoke.

Akatuski quietly left his wife's side, not that he really needed to be quiet. He could have run out of the room screaming like a maniac and it still wouldn't be likely that she would notice; she was buried to deep in her hysterics. Akatsuki needed to Kaname, he couldn't stand another moment of his screaming wife and his silent daughter. As he walked down the elegant staircase that he had run up and down far to many times in the last few hours the large door creaked open as his cousin walked in.
   "Hanabusa," Akatsuki greeted his cousin.
"Akatsuki, what's wrong?" Hanabusa asked Akatsuki as one of Ruka's wails ripped through the mansion.
"It's Sayuri...." Akatukis trailed off unable to explain his dilemma.
"Have you called for the doctor?" Hanabusa questioned Akatsuki clearly confused due to the lack of details.
"It's not something a doctor can fix," the red haired cousin replied bluntly.
"She's not dead is she?!" Hanabusa cried out demanding an answer from his silent cousin.
"No. At least not yet," Akatsuki explained his voice breaking, "I'm on my way to see if Kaname has figured anything out."
"I'll come with you," Hanabusa said offering his support.
Akatsuki nodded to let him know that his support was accepted and continued his decent down the stairway. The two cousins walked down the dark hallway lined with portraits of the Kuran family that lead to Kaname's office. The staring portraits. the lack  of any electrical lighting, and their echoing footsteps created and eerie atmosphere. The heavy oak door that normally sealed off the only entrance and exit to Kaname's study was cracked open projecting a slice of yellow light onto the crimson walls of the darkened hallway. Akatsuki didn't hesitate to pull the door fully open and enter into his friend and ruler's study while his cousin followed him a bit uncertainly. Kaname looked up from the large ancient book that he had been reading from and gave them an odd smile.
"I suppose you both have some questions," Kaname stated closing his book.
"Have you found anything to help my daughter?" Akatsuki asked him trying to hold back his desperation.
"No, I'm sorry," Kaname replied sadly barely able to hold his friend's disappointed gaze.
"Have you at least figured out why that man came?" Hanabusa asked hoping that Kaname had the answer to at least that of the many questions that needed answering.
"I knew that without doing any research," Kaname laughed bitterly. Hanabusa and Akatsuki left a few moments of silence for Kaname to share his knowledge with them, but no such answers came.
Hanabusa unable to bear his cousin's misery or Kaname's emotionlessness any longer slammed his hands onto the large wooden desk where Kaname had been working not really surprising anyone, "Well aren't you going to tell us?!"
"I suppose I can't hide this from you much longer. The man came to let me know that the extermination of all vampires had begun. I guess we've finally killed one human too many," Kaname explained, "and before you ask Akatsuki, this does have something to do with what happened to your daughter. Many centuries the hunters discovered an ancient charm that allows them to put vampire children that it deems innocent into a trance. After they get rid of those of us who aren't innocent they will gather up the children, remove the charm, and raise a generation of "good" vampires."
"Why not just kill us all?" Akatsuki asked.
"If they kill all vampires then the cosmic balance will be thrown off resulting in the destruction of the world," Kaname answered, "now leave me please, I have more research to do."
"Yes Kaname-sama," the cousins told him in unison not daring to question the pure blood any further.
They exited in silence and went their separate ways. There was no need to ask the other where they were going. Akatsuki knew that Hanabusa was going to the library to find more answers and Hanabusa knew that Akatsuki was going to return to his family and explain the situation. Both cousins smiled briefly knowing that they knew the other far to well.
