Prologue

The moon floated above the earth like a glowing white globe suspended among a million tiny diamonds. They cast an eery glow upon the blood stained battlefield. Only two figures stood in the darkness. The woman with dark brown hair that reached down to the middle of her back turned the man and places a hand on his shoulder. She opens her mouth to say something, but can not find any words. She walks away with tears in her eyes, the man stays....alone.....in the bloody darkness.

Chapter 1 Tragedy

Kuran Mansion

Yuuki burst through the door of the large mansion that she and Kaname lived in. The door slammed against the wall causing a crystals vase filled with roses the fall off of the table littering the floor with a glittering mess. The crash caused several of the guests that were staying with them to run down the elegant staircase. There were several cries of "Yuuki-sama!" and cries of "Are you alright?!" Yuuki ignored then all and ran up to her room and slammed the door. She heard several vases outside crash and fall to the ground outside of her room along with several worried whispers of her friend. She flung herself upon the king sized bed and began to sob. Yuuki squeezed her eyes shut and tried to make sense of what she'd just seen.
She and Kaname had been on a walk in their rose garden when the smell of blood had become incredibly strong. She and Kaname followed the scent and came to a blood stained field. There was only one body lying upon the blood stained field.....it was....no it couldn't have been....that's impossible, she thought. But she couldn't deny what she'd seen and heard. The vampire that laid dying on the field had uttered only one word "hunter" however in some situations one word is more than enough. Why would the hunters kill vampires without reason, she and Kaname had been informed that the extermination list was empty. The question that bothered her the most was this, why did the vampire look exactly like her father? Her thoughts were interrupted by a soft knocking on the door.
"May I come in, Yuuki-sama?" asked a timid Suzume. She was petite red head with green eyes. She was also Hanabusa's wife.
"Come in Suzume," Yuuki answered in an emotionless tone, trying to hide her tears.
"Kaname-sama came back......he wanted me to make sure that you were alright," she asked just as timidly as here first question.
"Why doesn't he just come make sure himself," Yuuki replied bitterly.
"He left almost as soon as he arrived," she told Yuuki quietly, "he said that it was on important matters."
"Alright," Yuuki nodded, "You may leave now, Suzume."
Suzume left with a quick bow and shut the door carefully behind her. Suzume turned to find that her husband waiting for her by the door. He gave her a look which meant "did you find out what happened?" Suzume shook her head. They descended down the seemingly endless hallway.
"Are the twins okay?" she asked him.
"They were a little scared at first, but I told then that it was just an accident, so they're alright now," he answered her.
"Where are they now?" she asked.
"They're in the third floor living room playing with Sayuri and Tadashi," he told her.
"That's good....hopefully they'll forget about this incident," she said quietly.
"Lets hope...." he said quietly as they walked into the living room.  Their daughter Ayame and Sayuri Akatuski and Ruka's daughter were playing with dolls, they were about the same age, Ayame being four years old and Sayuri being five years old. They were becoming best friends. Their son Ryo was playing a game of chess with Tadashi, Ichijo and Hitomi's son. Ryo and Tadashi were both four and were both very advanced for their age. Ruka was sitting on the couch watching them all. Akatsuki walked in a tapped Hanabusa on the shoulder.
"Ichijo and I are going out to see if we can find Kaname. Are you coming?" he asked.
"Sure....I'll be there in a second, what about Shiki?," he answered.
"Shiki is watching Hanako while Rima rests," Akatsuki answered. Hanabusa nodded in response. He quickly hugged his wife and left the room with Akatsuki. Suzume walked over and sat on the couch next to Ruka.
"How are they?" Suzume asked Ruka quietly so the children wouldn't here.
"They're just fine, I told them that it was nothing to worry about, to them it's like it never even happened," Ruka answered just as quietly as Suzume had asked her.
They're so inocent, Suzume thought, they believe us without question.

The Bloody Field

Ichijo, Hanabusa, and Akatuski stood in the middle of the blood stained field. Hanabusa picked up a vampire hunter's weapon.
"What do you think happened here?" Hanabusa asked his cousin and his friend.
"It looks like a mass extermination," Ichijo answered.
"Since when have there been that many vampires on the extermination list?" Hanabusa wondered out loud.
"And why would there be such a large group of vampires and why were they all here?" Akatsuki asked.
They fell silent knowing that it was unlikely that they would ever get any answers any time soon.
"We should sweep the surrounding area for any survivors," Ichijo suggested.
They all nodded and searched the area. There was nobody that could tell them why these strange events had occurred. The three of them returned to the center of the field. They stood there in silence. It was so quiet that they were able to here a twig snap under the weight of somone's foot. Thet turned to see a man clothed completely in black. He was wearing a scarf to hide his face.
"So, Kuran has sent his right hand men to sort out the mess for him," the man said.
"That's Kaname-sama to you-" Hanabusa growled, but was cut of Akatuski.
"We came here upon our own accord," he replied calmly.
"Well, I have a message for Kaname-sama," the man said Kaname's name with disgust, "I trust that you can give it to him."
"What is it?" Ichijo asked impatiently.
"Tell him that.....tell him that the plan will be executed," he told them ashe turned around and left.
"Wait! What does that mean?" Hanabusa yelled after the man, he started to go after him, but his cousin grabbed him.
"It's not worth it Hanabusa, he won't tell us," Akatsuki told him, "Let's go back to the mansion maybe Kaname has returned." Hanabusa pulled out of his cousins grasp and stormed off towards the mansion. Akatsuki shook his head and smiled, Hanabusa has always hated it when things were out of his control, he'd been like that since Akatsuki could remember.
"Shall we follow him?" Ichijo suggested. Akatsuki nodded and began to walk towards the mansion. He silently hoped that Kaname had returned or else Hanabusa would most definitely go out looking for answers on his own. When they were about half way there it began to snow. That's weird, Akatsuki thought, it shouldn't snow during the beginning of summer.  He quickened his pace to catch up with his cousin. They wlked together in silence, Akatsuki could tell that Hanabusa was desperately trying to put the few clues that they had together and turn it into an answer. When they finally arrived to the mansion, they found that Kaname still had not returned. Hanabusa headed in the direction of the library that was located in the Kuran Mansion, but he didn't make it very far. Before he'd even walked three feet he was ambushed by his son and daughter.
"Daddy! Where did you go?" asked Ayame as she clung to one of her father's legs, "Mommy was worried."
"Did she tell you that she was worried?" Hanabusa asked.
"Nope. I just knew, and Daddy...you're angry," the little girl said, "did we do something bad?"
"No of course not sweetie!" He told her and he scooped both of them up into his arms.
"Then why are you angry?" Ryo asked him curiously.
"It's hard to explain....." he answered hoping that his childen would leave it at that, but seeing as one of a young child's favorite words is why, he was not about to get off the hook so easily.
"Why Daddy?!" they asked in unison. He gave Akatsuki a "help me!" look, but what could he do. Luckily Hanabusa was rescued by Suzume.
"Ayame, Ryo, it's almost sunrise, it's time for bed," she told them.
"But Mommy!" Ayame whined.
"No buts, you're going to bed," She said sternly. Hanabusa carried the twins up the stairs helped his wife tuck in their rebelious children. After telling them two stories they finally fell asleep. Suzume and Hanabusa quietly left the room. They found that Yuuki was waitnig for them outside the door. Her face was stained with tears.
"Yuuki-sama, what's wrong," Suzume asked her with a worried tone in her voice. Yuuki rarely cried in front of anyone.
"Suzume may I speak with you...." she asked, the volume of her question was barely above a whisper.
"Of course Yuuki-sama," Suzume answered and followed her down the hall way. Yuuki lead her to the parlor on the north side if the building, Ruka, Hitomi, and Rima were already there. Yuuki and Suzume sat down. The room was filled with an uncomfortable silence until Yuuki began to sob.
"Yuuki-sama...why did you need to speak with us?" Rima asked.
"It's Kaname," she told them tearfully, "I'm worried about him."
"Has someone threatened him?" Hitomi asked.
"No...but he's been so angry lately and he won't talk to me about it and as far as I know he hasn't talked to anyone else about it...I'm worried he'll do something without thinking it through. He's also been distancing himself from everyone including me. He wouldn't even come upstairs to ask me if I was alright," Yuuki sobbed.
"Yuuki-sama, you shouldn't worry so much...you know that if Kaname-sama really needed help he would ask for it and even if he is distancing himself from you, he's probably only doing it to protect you," Ruka explained hoping that this might comfort Yuuki a little bit. When Yuuki remained silent Suzume added,
"And Yuuki-sama, Kaname might be over reacting, there might not even that big of a problem."
"Yeah," Rima told Yuuki, "Shiki does that all of the time."
"You know men Yuuki-sama, they always think that they know best for you," Ruka said. This put a small smile on Yuuki's face.
"You're probably right...I'm sorry for bothering you...you all must tire of taking care of me all of the time," Yuuki apologized.
"Yuuki-sama you don't need to aploigize," Hitomi told her, "we do thins not because we have to, but because we're your friends."
"Thank you," Yuuki said quietly as she exited the room. The four women sat there in silence until Shiki walked in with a grumpy Hanako in his arms.
"Rima, she won't go to sleep," he said tiredly as he handed their 7 month old daughter to her, "I tried everything, she just won't sleep." Almost as soon as Hanako was in Rima's arms she fell right to sleep.
"Aw man, I can't believe that I just spent an hour trying to get her to get her to fall asleep and all you had to was hold her," Shiki pouted.
"Don't worry Shiki, she just loves me best," Rima teased.
"Hey-" Shiki was cut off by the loud sound of the door being thrown open and glass shattering.
